Jujutsu Kaisen Vol. 0

This is the prequel story before the main Jujutsu Kaisen series. You can read it first or after volume 1 — I read 0 first because that’s what we had on the shelf.

Yuta Okkotsu is really anxious and his childhood friend Rika died in a car accident. Except she did not leave. She haunts him as a curse and she is extremely powerful and extremely protective. Gojo tries to help before things get worse. They get worse anyway.

What I liked

• The art is incredible. Every curse looks disgusting in a cool way.
• Yuta is sad but not boring. You actually care why he is fighting.
• Gojo is already iconic in this book and he is not even the main character.
• The ending hit hard. I did not expect to feel that much from one volume.

What I didn’t like

• It is genuinely scary in parts. Body horror, the lot. I mean it when I say 15+.
• Not as many jokes as volume 1. Still funny moments but mostly dark.

Verdict

If you want to know where Jujutsu Kaisen started, read this. Just know it is heavier than a lot of manga. Mum asked if I was okay after the train scene. I was fine. Mostly.
